San Angelo Fire Inspector Karla Steppe said that she has exhausted all accidental causes, and the investigation into the fire that destroyed a residence early this morning has become a criminal arson investigation.
At 2:40 a.m. Sunday morning, the San Angelo Fire Department responded to a structure fire at a two-story residence near W. 23rd St. and Farr St. “The fire was upstairs in the living quarters,” Steppe said. “They didn’t use that much water to put it out, though. Only 500 gallons.”

Abilene transplant Victor Brown lives in the damaged home. “I was up in Abilene visiting family. I came home early this morning and my house was on fire,” he said. “I only lived here four months!”
Brown said he moved to San Angelo from Abilene and so far has enjoyed living here. “I like San Angelo much, much better,” Brown said. “It’s a cute little place, I was going to make it happen. Affordable living!” he said regarding his home.

Brown said that he isn’t expecting any financial assistance. “I work every day. If I don’t get any financial assistance, I’ll be alright,” he said.
Steppe did not comment more. “Since this is now considered arson, I cannot comment on the details,” Steppe said.
Below, Patrick Cockerell posted this video of the fire last night on Facebook.
Well if anyone From San Angelo was wondering what was going on with the sirens on 23rd street at 2:40 in the morning, there was a house fire a few houses down from Franco's Cafe on the opposite side of the street. Got a little bit of video but it kinda sucks though....
