COVER1: TLCA Eagles Suit Up for 2023

SAN ANGELO, TX — The 2023 High School Football season is quickly approaching, and fall camps are underway. The TLCA Eagles and new Head Football Coach Paulo Gonzalez looked to hit the ground running on Tuesday, August 1. The Eagles began their day early, with a 6 a.m. start time, and practiced through the morning.

San Angelo LIVE!’s Ryan Chadwick caught up with Coach Gonzalez during the special teams' portion of practice to discuss how the Eagles have progressed since he arrived on campus. Check out the interview below.

One of the players whom fans can be excited about going into this season is TLCA’s quarterback, Layne Honea. The 6’0” senior has a cannon for an arm and through some good-looking balls at camp on Tuesday. While it’s still early, Tuesday was the second practice of the summer; Honea had great zip behind his shorter passes and excellent touch on his deep throws. With Coach Gonzalez’s version of the spread in place, look for the Eagles to light up the scoreboard this season. Coach Gonzalez agrees.

“With [his arm], he’s going to be able to get the ball out quick, Gonzales said of Honea. “He’s good at reading [the defense]. We just have to be able to protect him. That’s the main thing. We have to keep working on the O-line and protect him.”

Anyone who is a fan of the spread knows how crucial protection from the offensive line is to success in that type of offense. TLCA has the pieces for a great line. Most of the big boys in the starting five are over six feet tall, with Junior Tackle Daniel Rangel pushing past 6’5”. Size isn’t everything, but it definitely solves several problems. Proper technique and footwork are crucial to a rock-steady brick wall, and TLCA has the coaches to mold these young men into a functioning unit.

The TLCA Eagles kick off their 2023 season on Friday, August 25, when they host the Ozona Lions here in San Angelo at 7 p.m.
