SAN ANGELO— A San Angelo man has been indicted for stealing a semi-truck and crashing it near Loop 306 and North Bell Street back in March.
David Conklin, 42, has been indicted by a Tom Green County grand jury in May for theft of property that was valued greater than $30,000 but equal to or less than $150,000
As we reported earlier, a San Angelo police officer was dispatched to North Bell Street and Lafollette Street on March 21, 2023, for a theft investigation. Investigators learned that a theft had occurred at B&W Trailer and Machine Shop, located at 560 North Bell Street.
Conklin allegedly stole a 1999 Model Peterbilt semi-truck and a semi-trailer. He then drove the stolen vehicle into the intersection of North Bell Street and Lafollette Street where he crashed into a signal light pole and power lines before flipping the trailer. Conklin fled the scene to a nearby residence on the 1600 block of Beacon Street where officers took him into custody.
Investigators spoke with the victim who stated he had parked the truck in the B&W Trailer and Machine shop parking lot and went inside to purchase some parts. The victim also stated he left the keys inside the truck. When he exited the business, the truck was gone. He also did not give anyone permission to operate his semi-truck.
A witness was interviewed and said she saw a semi-truck strike the power lines and signal light while attempted to turn onto Beacon Street. When the trailer flipped, she saw Conklin run to a residence.
Investigators went to Shannon Medical Center to speak with Conklin. He advised he would answer some questions after he was read his Miranda Rights. In the interview, Conklin said he remember driving the vehicle but did not remember stealing it. He went on to say he drove it around the area and then it wrecked. After speaking with Conklin, the investigator went back to the scene and located the keys just inside the door of a shed where Conklin said they would be.
Conklin was arrested and booked into the Tom Green County Detention Facility on March 21, 2023, and was charged with Theft of Property between $30,000 and $150,000. He is currently and inmate being held on $30,000 bond.
