MCCAMEY, TX — The Texas UIL (University Interscholastic League) is investigating a video that went viral on Twitter of an incident that occurred during the Area Round Playoff matchup between McCamey High School and Cisco High School. In the video, the McCamey Catcher hits a Cisco player in the head with a softball. It is unclear whether or not the catcher intentionally hit the Cisco player at this time.
According to KMID-TV in Odessa, the catcher hit a player twice on separate occasions in the game. Social media debated whether or not the catcher hit the batter on purpose. The man who identified himself as the player who was hit’s father first shared the viral video online. Check out the video here.
The video shows the batter attempting a bunt before pulling back and backing out of the batter's box. The catcher takes the ball and throws it down the third baseline but connects with the batter's head instead. According to KAMR4 in Amarillo, this might not be the first time this has happened. Two other schools may have been subject to two similar incidents this season.
During this investigation, UIL officials will have to decide what the catcher’s intent was during this incident. Accidents happen all the time in sports, and this incident might be just an unlucky coincidence. Cisco defeated McCamey at the end of this contest 2-0 to advance to the Regional Quarterfinals. McCamey’s softball season ended after this game.

The UIL provided an official statement to Odessa’s Newswest9 following the incident. “The UIL is aware of an incident that occurred during the McCamey vs. Cisco Softball Playoff Series and is in contact with the school administrations to gather additional information," the spokesperson said.
