Troubled San Angelo Woman Will be Evaluated for Competency Next Week

SAN ANGELO— A San Angelo woman with a violent past is being evaluated for competency next week while she awaits trial for a stabbing incident in 2020. 

Deborah Ramirez, 29, has been in custody at the Vernon State Mental Hospital and has been indicted by a Tom Green County grand jury for aggravated assault that caused serious bodily injury after she allegedly stabbed a woman in the chest.

According to court documents, on September 17, 2020, an investigator with the San Angelo Police Department responded to a reported stabbing on the 500 block of East Harris Street in San Angelo, Texas. Once he arrived at the duplex, the investigator learned that the victim had fled the residence after being stabbed by an unknown person.

The victim was located walking to Shannon Medical Center by a citizen. The victim then said to the citizen that Ramirez had stabbed her in the heart and that she was going to die. A detective responded to Shannon Medical Center where several Shannon staff members said the victim told them that “Deborah Ramirez” stabbed her.

Officer identified the other individuals in the residence and observed blood on the front porch which led inside the duplex. A blood trail could be seen from the residence to the yard and into the street. There was also blood in the living room and a bedroom. It was also learned that one of the occupants and Ramirez were both on the rental lease.

This occupant advised that he and his aunt were watching television in his bedroom. He went to the bathroom and heard a commotion coming from Ramirez’s bedroom that sounded like a “stomping noise.” Then, he heard a male subject yelling in Ramirez’s bedroom.

The man went back into his room and asked his aunt if she had heard anything, but she did not. Investigators spoke with the occupant’s aunt and she confirmed that she did not hear any commotion.

Then, the investigator spoke with a witness that was in the bedroom with Ramirez and the victim. Ramirez and the witness were lying on the bed while the victim was sitting across from them in a chair. According to the witness, Ramirez jumped up and made a punching or flicking motion toward the victim who was still seated in the chair. The witness told investigators that he did not see any sharp object in Ramirez’s hand and did not see the victim get injured.

When the investigator spoke with Ramirez, she confirmed that the victim had been at the residence but provided no further information other than the claim that she was not aware the victim had been stabbed.

The investigator spoke with Shannon Medical Center ICU staff and learned that the victim’s statue was considered critical. The victim did have a wound to her left upper chest area which lacerated her left lung.

Ramirez was arrested on September 17, 2020, for aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury and was released on February 8, 2023. She has a competency hearing April 11 in Tom Green County.
