Wild Details Released About Drug Fueled Shooting Tuesday

SAN ANGELO— San Angelo Police have released more information detailing the shooting Tuesday night that has resulted in the arrest on another individual.

Donald Spradley and Donita Klement have been arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and tampering with evidence respectively.

According to court documents, on April 4, 2023, San Angelo Police Officers were dispatched to the 600 block of North Jackson Street in reference to an unknown problem. In the alleyway, officers encountered a shooting victim who was bleeding from the upper portion of his body. The officer reported that the victim stated that Donald Spradley shot him in an altercation in a garage on the 1000 block of North Monroe Street. 

The victim was transported to Shannon Medical Center for treatment and investigators were able to interview him there. The victim allegedly told investigators that he and Spradley were inside the garage at a residence on the 1000 block of North Monroe Street and were consuming alcoholic beverages and inhaling Nitros Oxide from an aerosol air duster.

The victim then allegedly told the investigator that Spradley began consuming a large amount of N2O and the victim wanted the canister of N2O back. A verbal altercation ensued over the inhalant that escalated to the point where Spradley grabbed a silver revolver and fired three rounds towards the victim.

According to the victim, one round went by the left side of his body, the second went right by his head, and the third round struck his left shoulder area. After the victim had been shot, a physical fight over the handgun began. Spradley was able to maintain possession of the handgun which caused the victim to flee the scene where he was intercepted by the San Angelo Police Department at the 600 block of North Jackson Street.

The officer who located the victim had contact earlier in the day over a minor motor vehicle accident. The officer stated to the investigator that he knew where the incident likely took place and that Spradley would possibly be there due to the vehicle accident investigation.

The San Angelo Police established a perimeter around the residence on the 1000 block of North Monroe Street and began attempted to make contact with Spradley over the “PA” system. After some time, Spradley approached the residence, was taken into custody, and transported to the CID Annex building for an interview.

During this interview, Spradley was read his Miranda Rights and allegedly made several admissions and described how and why he shot the victim. Investigators conducted a consent search of the North Monroe residence where a firearm matching the description above was found.

Spradley was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and was booked on April 5, 2023, and was released the same day on $75,000 bond.

While the investigation was ongoing, the investigator was contacted by Donita Klement, who stated she had information regarding the case and agreed to come in for a voluntary statement. Klement allegedly stated that since the shooting, she had been at Spradley’s residence and was attempting to search the house.

Klement then allegedly told investigators that Spradley had contacted her after the shooting and that he was walking to the Dollar General and needed to be picked up. Klement then said that Spradley told her about the shooting between himself and the victim. She observed Spradley to be covered in blood and that Spradley used a residence on the 100 block of Belair Street to clean himself up.

Klement then told Spradley that he could not stay with her, and she dropped him off at an unknown location. She then allegedly placed Spradley’s bloody shoes and clothing in a box.

When investigators asked Klement if she had called the police after finding out about the shooting, she stated she did not. When the investigator asked if reporting the shooting was something she should have done, Klement allegedly said she was planning to at 8:00 a.m. the next day but never did.

Klement then said the investigator would not find any of Spradley’s shoes or clothing at the residence on the 100 block of Belair because it was currently at a residence on the 3000 block of Southland Boulevard and that he would not find it without her help because it was “well hidden.”

The investigator believed that Klement aided Spradley in concealing physical evidence pertaining to the shooting investigation by moving bloody clothes and shoes that belonged to Spradley from Belair Street to Southland Boulevard. Klement also made no effort to alert law enforcement of the shooting after she had knowledge of it and furthermore did not turn over physical evidence that a reasonable person would have known was part of the investigation.

Klement was arrested for tampering with evidence and was booked into the Tom Green County Detention Facility on April 4, 2023, and was released on April 5, 2023, on $35,000 bond.
