ASU Engineering Students Shoot for the Stars with 'Falcon 9'-like Rocket Launch

SAN ANGELO, TX – Angelo State University’s RAMgineers team of engineering students conducted the first test-fire launch of its full-scale rocket, CandyRam, at Eggemeyer Field south of Wall Monday evening in preparation for a NASA competition.

Eggermeyer Field is a former WWII Airfield with runways that was once used as a race track known as the Wall Speedway.  The airfield was one of several used to train pilots for WWII.

The RAMgineers were testing their rocket in preparation to compete in the 2023 NASA Student Launch Initiative later this spring in Alabama.

The CandyRam rocket is 8-feet tall with a 5-inch diameter and weighs approximately 20 pounds. The rocket launched, travel to an altitude of over 5,000 feet, land safely and then deploy a remote-controlled camera to photograph the landing site.

The RAMgineers are one of just 69 student teams, representing 25 states and Puerto Rico, selected to compete in the 2023 NASA Student Launch Initiative. The selected teams were announced in October 2022 and began the nine-month challenge to design and build their rockets.

The Student Launch Initiative contest is scheduled for April 13-15 at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.
