SAN ANGELO – Meteorologists with the National Weather Service office in San Angelo have issued a Red Flag Warning for Wednesday afternoon because of an increase in winds, hot dry air and abundance of fuel for wildfires.
The Red Flag Warning will be in effect from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday.
According to the NWS, west to southwest sustained winds will increase to 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 50 mph and combine with low humidity levels below 20 percent. Dry brush and grass across the pasture land in the Concho Valley will provide more than adequate fuels for any wildfires that ignite and they could rapidly burn out of control.
All outdoor activity, burning trash, open flames for cooking, and even welding are highly discouraged.
Tom Green County Commissioners Tuesday morning discussed instating a burn ban but declined to do so.
A Red Flag Warning means that fire weather conditions will occur. A combination of strong winds, low humidity and very dry fuels will contribute to extreme wildfire behavior.
