CHRISTOVAL, TX — Christoval Cougars’ football star defensive end Nicolai Nelson signed with Hardin-Simmons on Friday, Feb. 3, at Christoval High School. The District 1-2A Defensive MVP and our All-COVER1 1st Team Defense recipient will continue his football career next season in Abilene with the Cowboys.
Nelson accumulated over 100 tackles in his career at Christoval and added 45 solo tackles in 2022 alone. He led his team with nine sacks during the 2022 season, with three passes defended and three caused fumbles as a defensive end. The two-year varsity starter helped Christoval make the playoffs each year he played for the Cougars and was a big part of their district championship in 2021.
We met with Nelson for an interview before the signing to hear his thoughts on the opportunity. Watch the video below.
Cougars’ Head Coach Casey Otho had great things to say about the young man. Take a look at his interview about Nelson.
Hardin-Simons finished 7-1 in their conference last year with a 9-2 overall record. However, their promising 2022 campaign ended in the first round of the NCAA Div III playoffs. Nelson has good size for a defensive end, and once his college coaches get ahold of him, he will be an asset for the Cowboys.
