DENVER, CO — The Denver Broncos and the New Orleans Saints are working on a trade that would send Super Bowl winning Head Coach Sean Payton to the Broncos.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapaport, a deal has been agreed to concerning Sean Payton. Rapoport said in a tweet that the Broncos are sending their 2023 first-round draft pick, currently 29th overall from San Francisco, and an early-round pick in 2024 to the New Orleans Saints for Payton to become the next Denver Broncos head coach. The Saints will also send a 2024 third-round pick to the Broncos in the deal.
This isn't the first coaching trade in the NFL, and some well-known and successful coaches were traded in the past.
- Bill Parcells-Patriots to the Jets (1997)
- Mike Holmgren- Packers to Seahawks (1999)
- Bill Belichick- Jets to Patriots (2000)
- Jon Gruden- Raiders to Buccaneers (2002)
- Herm Edwards- Jets to Chiefs (2006)
- Bruce Arians- Cardinals to Buccaneers (2019)
All of those coaches, with the exception of Edwards, although he is a good coach in his own right, took the next team to the playoffs, with Belichick being a clear win for the Patriots.
The San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator, who took the Houston Texans job, was linked to the Broncos for some time as late as Tuesday afternoon. When Ryans took the Texans' job, it was reported that Denver agreed for Payton. Denver was also linked to Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh.
The Broncos fired head coach Nathaniel Hackett during the season after a 4-11 start in his first season.
