Little Southwest Conference Football Players Make Super Elite Team

SAN ANGELO — The Little Southwest Conference is well represented on the Texas High School Coaches Association’s Super Elite Team recently.

To be considered for the Texas High School Coaches Association’s Super Elite Team, players have to be of good moral character, played varsity sports exclusively, excelled as an elite member of their team, and been in good standing with the team when they were nominated.

Frenship’s offensive guard/defensive tackle Isaiah Kema and Permian’s offensive lineman Harris Sewell both made the 2A-6A Super Elite Team. While no players from the Concho Valley made the team, the Big Country and Permian Basin are well represented.

The Wink Wildcats have several players included on the list including quarterback/safety Kanon Gibson, defensive end/H-back Creed Freich, and wide receiver/safety Jordan Tally made the team.

Gibson went off this season, going 160-264 for 2,642 yards, 30 touchdowns, and five interceptions. On defense, Gibson had 113 total tackles, four tackles for loss, six interceptions that were returned for a total of 217 yards, three caused fumbles, and one fumble recovery. Tally did most of his damage on offense where he caught 65 passes for 1,207 yards and 16 touchdowns but he did have one interception on defense. Frerich had 88 tackles, six tackles for loss, one sack, one fumble recovery, and one caused fumble.

The Wildcats met up with the Albany Lions right here in San Angelo at San Angelo Stadium where the Lions beat the Wildcats 35-18.

In Wink’s district is the McCamey Badgers, who are also represented on the list with Matthew Rosas who rushed 106 times for 913 yards and 13 touchdowns. On defense, Rosas had 106 tackles, eight tackles for loss, one sack, four interceptions, six pass break-ups, seven caused fumbles, and two fumble recovery.

Both McCamey and Wink will play Water Valley, Sterling City, and Eldorado next season.

Two heavyweight teams out of the Big Country, Cisco and Hawley, each have one player on the list in Hawley’s wide receiver Will Scott, and Cisco’s quarterback Hunter Long.

Long threw and rushed for 3,674 yards this past season and put up 45 touchdowns. He rushed for over 2,000 yards (2,232) and 26 scores.

Scott caught 44 passes for 739 yards, and nine touchdowns on offense and was tied for second in tackles with 113, 11 tackles for loss, four interceptions, two passes defended, two fumble recoveries, and two caused fumbles.

Both Hawley and Cisco met in the regular season which came down to the wire with Hawley edging out Cisco 36-33, then again in the playoffs where the Bearcats put it on the Loboes 40-7 on their way to a state championship.

3A teams in the Brownwood area had a couple players made the list. Those include Early’s Caleb McCullough and Comanche’s star running back Sawyer Wilkerson made the Super Elite Team. McCullough had a year on defense from the linebacker position where he had 113 tackles, 31 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, 12 quarterback pressures, six caused fumbles, 1 interception, two fumble recoveries and 1 pass defended.

Wilkerson, only a sophomore, rushed 259 times for 2,601 yards and 29 touchdowns.

Quinten McCarty, who played nose guard for the Brownwood Lions, was the 2-4A D1 Defensive MVP with 128 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries, and had one punt blocked.
