SAN ANGELO, TX — It was announced on Friday that Angelo State University would be building a new police department headquarters. The location has a history, however.
”Construction has begun at Vanderventer Plaza on the new University Police Department,” stated the Angelo State Police Department’s Facebook Page. “The new 8,000 sq ft facility will house the police department and Emergency Operations Center (EOC).”
The Vanderventer Plaza has been the home to a number of businesses throughout the years including the Asian Market, Lilly’s Pizza, and the Sports Store. However, one business formerly located there had the most interesting story of them all.
The corner building on the lot was used as a night club. Most recently the club had the name of Lism (Little is More). This nightclub closed down in 2018 but the venue was still used for night time events.
One event in particular that brought this lot to the news scene was fight night. As previously reported, in Oct. 2019, party promoter Anthony Camp held fight night in the club. At the time he claimed that San Angelo's Caged Fight Nights were Wholesome Sporting Events.
Now the entire shopping center has been purchased by Angelo State University. The university will move its police headquarters from the former location at 2601 W. Avenue N. Completion date is expected to be next fall.
A police station is a fitting end to the original location of San Angelo's notorious fight club.
