BROWNWOOD, TX — Former Brownwood Lions and NFL Kicker Matthew McCrane returns to pro football this season as he signed with the XFL’s D.C. Defenders on Tuesday.
The Lions standout previously played in the first incarnation of the current XFL for the New York Guardians in 2020. When Covid canceled their season, McCrane spent two seasons in the NFL with the Browns, Eagles, and Cardinals.
McCrane, 28, appeared in five NFL games and on practice squads prior to 2020 for the Raiders, Steelers, Eagles, and Browns. The 2013 Brownwood High School graduate still holds his school’s record for the longest field goal in a game (53 yards).
McCrane attended Kansas State University in College, where he was a semifinalist for the Lou Grouza Award. This award is given to College Football’s best kicker every year. He finished his career at Kansas State as their all-time leader in field goals (57), field goal percentage (86.4%), and extra point percentage (99.3%). He also finished third all-time in total points with 304 points.
Reggie Barlow, former Virginia State head coach, will coach the D.C. Defenders in their 10-game schedule this season. McClane’s only game in Texas this year will come on Apr. 22 in San Antonio.
The DC Defenders open the season against the Seattle Dragons on Sunday, Feb. 19, at 7 p.m. in Washington D.C. The game will be aired on ESPN.
