SAN ANGELO – Frostbite and hypothermia are the most serious dangers with the dangerous and deadly wind chill values West Texans will experience beginning Thursday. The National Weather Service office in San Angelo has issued a Wind Chill Watch from 6 a.m. Thursday to noon on Friday but temperatures will remain below freezing well into the weekend.
A Wind Chill Watch means that there is a potential for a combination of very cold air and strong winds to create dangerously low wind chill values. The Wind Chill Watch could be upgraded to a Wind Chill Warning if conditions deteriorate.
Forecast models now show low temperatures could drop to single digits and low teens by Friday morning so rural areas could see deadly wind chill values. The temperature may not reach above freezing until sometime Saturday and then only briefly. Temps on Christmas Day will warm back in to the upper 40s.
In the mean time, avoid all outdoor activity if at all possible. If you must be outside, dress in layers and cover exposed skin. Do not remain outdoors for extended periods of time because frostbite and hypothermia can begin within just 30 minutes.
As we advised earlier, bring all outdoor pets inside and wrap all exposed pipes. Provide extra food and fresh water for livestock especially exotic animals which are not accustomed to the cold.
This is a serious weather situation and emergency responders will be experiencing the same life threatening conditions.
