Jail Population at 91 Percent of Capacity

The county jail's population is just high enough to keep it on the state's watch list this morning, despite slow traffic into the overcrowded facility over the past few rainy days. With 409 of 449 beds occupied, the facility is running at 91 percent full, a slight drop from the near 97 percent reported last week when the sheriff announced he had 434 beds filled on May 12.

Tuesday saw one of the slowest days in the facility's intake in recent months, when six men and three women were booked into the jail, three on complaints and six on warrants. Of those jailed for offenses alleged to have been committed within the last 24 hours two women were booked for possession of marijuana and paraphernalia, both misdemeanor charges. A third individual was picked up for disorderly conduct abusive language, while the remainder were booked on warrants. 

One of those booked, 24-year-old Beverly Brooke Castaneda, was jailed on 14 warrants stemming from traffic infractions, failure to appear in court, contempt of court, drugs and weapons. Castaneda has 16 records on file with the county jail starting with various warrants and a car theft in 2008. 

A total of 27 inmates were released on Tuesday.
