NWS: Dangerous Freezing Rain Could Make Driving Hazardous Saturday Morning

SAN ANGELO – A cold front will mix with abundant moisture across West Texas late Friday night and early Saturday morning to kick off light rain and drizzle which could turn into freezing rain and sleet as the temperature drops below freezing near sunrise Saturday morning.  

Driving will be hazardous on bridges and overpasses. 

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service in San Angelo have issued a special weather statement advising that roadways will be worse in the northern counties as colder temperatures and more precipitation are expected there, mainly north of a Sterling City to Brownwood line. 

Texas Department of Transportation crews have already treated bridges and overpasses in the northern Concho Valley and the Big Country in anticipation of the freezing precipitation.  

There is a 30% chance of freezing rain and drizzle after 3 a.m. Saturday morning increasing to a 50% chance between sunrise and noon Saturday.  

Temperatures are expected to hover around 32 degrees from midnight tonight to noon Saturday.  The high Saturday will only reach about 40 degrees.  

The freezing rain and drizzle is expected to be light and little accumulation is expected but roadways will be slick and hazardous in places.
