SONORA- The Sonora Broncos are set to take on the Farwell Steers in the second round of the Texas High School Playoffs in Big Spring this Friday.
The Broncos beat the Olney Cubs last week 28-27 on a missed field goal but make no mistake this Sonora team can play.
In the opening quarter, Bronco quarterback Jaime Buitron fumbled the ball that was returned by Cubs defender AB Marquez for a touchdown. Not to take a shot or anything at the Broncos but that’s seven points that could’ve gone the other way, then you’re looking at a 35-21 score at the end of the game. Hindsight is 20/20 and “Ifs” are a fun game to play but put money on head coach Blake Weston bringing that up this week in practice.
Olney was not an average fourth seed team as they play in one of the toughest districts in 2A football. The Cubs had to fight Hawley, Cisco, and Stamford during district this year. So, while the Big County and Panhandle are full of great teams, Sutton County has a good one as well.
A lot of success on the field goes to quarterback Jaime Buitron and playmakers Hunter O’Banon and Edgar DeLuna.
Buitron, who won the 2A Built Ford Tough Player of the Week for his game against Forsan, has gone 84-150 for 1,468 yards, 16 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. On the ground, Buitron leads the team with 1,775 yards and 22 scores.
O’Banon is in second in yards with 1,188 and seven touchdowns and has 453 receiving yards with another seven scores.
DeLuna was instrumental in Sonora’s win over the Cubs. He scored twice and his rushing score was at a critical point in the game. This season, he’s put up 1,084 combined yards and 11 scores but has 164 tackles, 20 of those for loss, two interceptions, and one caused fumble on the season.
Those three guys get a lot of press, but the rest of the team deserves recognition as well. Owen Jones made a key grab late in the game that helped pin the Cubs deeper on the field. Damien Reyes showed up in big moments, getting off his block to make big time tackles. Tristian Ford had a huge sack to help the Broncos keep momentum.
This week, the Broncos get a chance at Farwell, who beat Olton last week 41-23. The Steers are in a similar situation as Olney. Their district features defending state champ, the Stratford Elks, and Panhandle, who lost to Cisco in the second-round last season.
Farwell is so much like Olney also in the fact that the only district teams they lost to finished ahead of them in the district. Olney went 3-3 in district and lost to Hawley, Cisco, and Stamford, and Farwell went 3-2, losing to Stratford and Panhandle.
The Steers have put up 402 points this season and have only given up 158 points.
