San Angeloan Seriously Injured in Rainy Fatal Crash Near Abilene

CISCO – A San Angelo man was seriously injured on Friday night after he and another person were hit by a car on the I-20 service road west of Cisco.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, on Oct. 28 at around 8:30 p.m., troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety were dispatched to the I-20 south access from, about 4 miles west of Cisco, for the report of a major crash between a car and a pedestrian.

When the troopers arrived on scene it was discovered that a 1998 Chevrolet Lumina driven by 75-year-old Larry Bryant, 75, of Cisco had struck two pedestrians who were walking in the roadway. 

One pedestrian, Tunde Mustapha Obawunmi, 46, male, of Little Elm, was pronounced dead on scene by Justice of the Peace, Jesse Spears at 10/28/22 8:22 p.m. The second pedestrian, Olatunji Alex Atere 38, of San Angelo, was transported to Hendricks Medical Center in Abilene with serious injuries.

The preliminary investigation by the DPS found that the Lumina was traveling west on the south access road of Interstate 20 at the 326-mile marker traveling up a grade in the roadway.  Both Obawunmi and Atere were walking west on the south access road of Interstate 20 at mile marker 326 on the downward grade of the roadway. 

The Lumina came over the roadway grade, striking both pedestrians walking on the roadway. Obawunmi was killed in the crash and Atere was seriously injured. 

At the time of the crash the weather conditions were raining and the road conditions were wet.
