San Angelo Man Arrested After Violent Brutal Attack on Former Spouse

SAN ANGELO – A San Angelo man has been arrested for aggravated assault after allegedly assaulting a woman and putting a gun to her head.

According to court documents, on October 25, 2022, San Angelo police responded to the 2700 block of McGill Boulevard regarding an assault. An officer stated that he spoke with the victims, one male and one female, and learned that the defendant, identified as Mason Burkey, brandished a firearm and pointed the gun at the two victims. The officer also noted that Burkey was no longer on scene.

The investigator spoke with the male victim who informed him that once he and the female victim arrived at the residence, he met Burkey. The male victim said they spoke for a while until he and the female victim went into a bedroom. After a short time, Burkey came into the room and told the male victim to leave the residence. Burkey also allegedly asked the victim if he wanted a forty-five several times before leaving the room.

The male victim then said as he left the residence, he looked across the living room and saw Burkey holding a pistol and at one point, he pulled the slide back as if he was chambering a round in the handgun The male victim then said he was in fear he would be shot and Burkey followed him outside the house. Once he was outside, Burkey allegedly shut the door and the male victim could hear the female victim screaming.

The investigator then spoke with the female victim who stated she and Burkey are separated and live in separate rooms of the residence. The investigator observed visible injuries on the female victim including injures to her right eye, scratches on her forehead, and bruising on her right wrist.

The female victim said she brought the male victim home with her and stated that her, the male victim, and Burkey spoke for a while before both victims went into her bedroom. After a short time, the female victim stated the Burkey allegedly kicked in the door and began yelling at the male victim to leave the residence. She then said Burkey went and got a black pistol and pointed it at the male victim until he left the residence. The woman stated she tried to leave with the man, but Burkey was blocking the doorway with a gun in his hand.

After Burkey closed the front door, he and the female victim began yelling at each other. Then, according to the victim, Burkey grabbed her by the neck and pointed the pistol against her forehead. The female then said she and Burkey began to physically hit each other while Burkey allegedly still had the gun in his hand.

The woman stated that she was able to punch Burkey in the nose which caused it to bleed. At this time, the female victim was able to run to her room, grab her purse and phone, then left the residence. She also stated that she was contacted by Burkey who told her she needed to remove her stuff from the residence.

A search warrant was issued for the pistol due to Burkey and the woman begin co-habitated and Burkey was not on scene to grant consent for a seach. The residence was searched for the pistol, but it was not located. Two boxes of .40 caliber unspent cartridges and a holster for a handgun were located inside. This indicated to investigators that Burkey removed his firearms from the residence after the alleged incident occurred.

Burkey was located at the 6900 block of Spindle Top Road. He was read his Miranda Rights and refused to speak without his attorney present.

Burkey was arrested at 6:48 p.m. on October 25, 2022 and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault of a date, family, or household member with a weapon. He is currently an inmate at the Tom Green County Detention Facility and his bond has been set at $75,000.
