SAN ANGELO – A small group of San Angeloans gathered at the 9/11 memorial by the River Stage downtown Friday morning to mark the 21st Anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States that ushered in the War on Terror and killed 3,000 Americans.
The San Angelo Fire Department organized the annual memorial service.
Col. Eugene Moore III, Commander of the 17th Mission Support Group at Goodfellow Air Force Base was the keynote speaker. City Councilman Tom Thompson made opening remarks on behalf of the city. Councilmen Harry Thomas and Larry Miller were in attendance along with Newly Sworn in Fire Chief Patrick Brody and San Angelo Police Chief Frank Carter.
The local 9/11 memorial was dedicated on Sept. 8, 2003, in honor of those who died in the attacks. San Angelo’s is one of a few memorials in Texas that includes a piece of steel from Ground Zero in New York City. The monument’s original World Trade Center steel artifact was stolen in 2016. In 2017, the Velez family donated another steel artifact from Ground Zero. It is now a centerpiece for the monument’s repair and restoration.

The Terrorists also targeted either the Whitehouse or the Capitol Building in Washington, but that airplane, Flight 93, went down in a field in Pennsylvania when passengers fought the Terrorists.

We will never forget that on September 11, 9AD, that the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest ended after four days with a Germanic alliance defeating Roman forces and putting an end to expansion of the empire east of the Rhine. What separates men from animals? The Rhine.
