San Angelo Will Be Ground Zero for Texas Governor's Race Tuesday

SAN ANGELO – Texas Democrats and Republicans will converge on San Angelo Tuesday afternoon as competing rallies for Robert O'Rourke and Gov. Greg Abbott collide in what is being described by statewide media as the closest race for Governor since the 1990s.  

Democratic candidate for Texas Governor Robert O'Rourke will campaign at the Ministerial Alliance, 1100 MLK Blvd. at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.  

UPDATE: The O'Rourke campaign announced Monday morning that has moved its rally from the nonprofit, religious facility to the McNease Convention center.  

Across town, Concho Valley Republicans will hold the 'Keep Texas Texas' Rally at the Paseo on S. Oaks St. across from Ft. Concho at 5:30 p.m.  The event is hosted by the San Angelo Republican Women, the Concho Valley Republican Women, the San Angel Pachyderm Club and the Tom Green County Republican Party.  

The O'Rourke campaign says the Democrat will continue to focus on "creating great jobs, investing in world-class schools, expanding health care... and uniting Texans to overcome Abbott’s extremism — from his total ban on abortion with no exception for rape or incest, to defunding public schools, driving up inflation and blocking commonsense measures to keep kids and communities safe."

Democrats have also made 'Fix the Damn Grid' a cornerstone of the November election.  The Texas electric grid has continued to function properly since the Texas Legislature passed measures reinforcing the grid during the last session.  

Abbott has a 5-point lead over O’Rourke ahead of November’s election in the most recent poll, showing a tight race given that no Democrat has won statewide office since 1994. 

Nearly half, or 49%, of likely voters support Abbott, the two-term Republican, versus 44% for former congressman O’Rourke, according to a poll from the Hobby School of Public Affairs at the University of Houston released Wednesday. 

Abbott has made illegal immigration, school safety, and the Texas economy priorities heading into November.
