Gary Jenkins' Campaign for Tom Green County Judge Is Over

SAN ANGELO – Independent Tom Green County Judge Hopeful Gary Jenkins will end his campaign for the County's top elected office Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. according to an email sent from his campaign late Monday.

"Gary Jenkins, will hold a news conference at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 28, 2022 at the Ed Keys building at 113 Beauregard to announce the end of his campaign as an independent candidate for Tom Green County Judge.  Jenkins  will thank all of the people who worked on his campaign and all of the people who believed in his campaign by signing his petition.  During the press conference, Jenkins will explain why his campaign has come to an end."

Jenkins historic run as an independent candidate was an uphill battle from the beginning.  He was attempting to run outside the party system, choosing not to run as a Republican or a Democrat in the March primary election, instead running as an independent candidate.

To make the November general election ballot as an independent candidate, Jenkins had to secure 500 signatures of registered Tom Green County voters who had not cast ballots in either the primary election or the runoff election.  Jenkins had from May 25 to June 23 at 5 p.m. to gather the signatures and deliver them to the Tom Green County Judge.  Jenkins delivered the petition to Judge Steve Floyd last Thursday.  The Judge then had five business days to certify all the signatures met the criteria set out by the Texas Secretary of State's office.

Jenkins said during a Juneteenth celebration on June 18 that he planned on delivering a petition with 700 to 800 signatures to the County Judge for certification.
