Angelo State University Soccer Fields to get $1.6 Million Upgrade

SAN ANGELO, TX – The Angelo State University Soccer Complex is set to undergo a $1.6 million, two-year renovation project that will add additional covered fan seating, a press box and the soccer program's first dedicated clubhouse.

The first phase of the project will feature installation of stadium seating, a covering steel canopy, a modular press box and related infrastructure, with targeted completion prior to the start of the fall 2022 season. The new seating will significantly increase the complex's current seating capacity of about 500 fans.

The second phase of the project will feature construction of the Soccer Clubhouse, which is targeted for completion in time for the start of the fall 2023 season. Since the ASU soccer program was introduced in 1996, the Rambelles and their opponents have been using locker rooms and athletic training areas in the ASU Junell Center.

Project costs will be covered by external funding sources.

"This is great news for our players, our fans and the entire program," said Travis McCorkle, head soccer coach. "Our team's success and the rising popularity of soccer in the U.S. have attracted many more fans to our home matches, so the added seating is definitely needed. The clubhouse will be an awesome place that our players can call their own, and the press box will better accommodate our athletic communications staff and the media. It's really a win-win for everyone involved."

"Having top-notch facilities also helps with recruiting," he added. "The new clubhouse, in particular, will certainly help us continue to attract outstanding student-athletes to proudly represent the ASU Ram Family on the soccer field."

The new two-phase project is just the latest in a series of renovations to the Soccer Complex since it was constructed in 1996.

"This is another example of Angelo State moving forward and constantly improving," said Athletic Director James Reid. "ASU is known for having some of the best athletic facilities in all of NCAA Division II, and we are committed to making sure all of our student-athletes and fans have the best possible experience at our home events. The renovations and new facilities at the Soccer Complex will have a dynamic impact not only on the Rambelles soccer team, but also the growing number of students and community members of all ages who support the players, coaches and staff."

That fan support has been well-rewarded as the Rambelles have won seven Lone Star Conference regular-season and tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament seven times since 2010. Numerous players have earned All-LSC, All-South Central Region and All-America honors, and McCorkle is a five-time LSC Coach of the Year. The entire coaching staff was named NCAA D-II National Coaching Staff of the Year in 2020 by the United Soccer Coaches (USC) organization following ASU's first-ever undefeated season.

During the most recent fall 2021 season, the Rambelles won the LSC Tournament and advanced to the second round of the NCAA D-II Tournament, finishing the season 16-5-2. Seniors Avery McNeme and Kira Miller were named the LSC Midfielder of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year, respectively, and they were also named All-South Central Region along with junior defender Cassidy Hill. McNeme earned multiple All-America honors, while Miller and Hill were named USC Scholar All-Americans.
