Deadly Record Heat Forecast for West Texas This Weekend

SAN ANGELO – The oppressive heat wave is expected to intensify over the weekend with record high temperatures near 110 degrees by Sunday as part of a string of 100 degree days which will extend to at least the following weekend with no relief in site.  In fact, meteorologists say there will be little relief from the heat overnight with temperatures hovering around 80 degrees.  

Experts with the National Weather Service in San Angelo say they don't expect a Heat Advisory for Friday because winds will not reach high enough levels to issue one.  There is a good chance the NWS will issue a Heat Advisory for Saturday and an Excessive Heat Warning for Sunday.  Expect plenty of sunshine for the most part everyday which will intensify the effect of the heat. 

As of Friday morning, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) says the Lone Star State electric grid has plenty of capacity to meet current demand and the demand anticipated during the current heat wave.  

Water supplies are in adequate shape for West Central Texas, so there should be no interruption in electric or water supplies for residents during the heat wave.  

Traditionally in drought years the San Angelo area has experienced some type of respite from the heat around the Independence Day Holiday on July 4 and then again around Labor Day around the first weekend of September.  Historically, the month of August has been the hottest of the summer on average.  

To protect yourself and your family during the heat wave, stay out of the sun.  If you do go outdoors, drink plenty of non-alcoholic liquids, take frequent breaks and spend some time in the shade.  Everyone working in the outdoors is advised to take breaks and spend some time in an air-conditioned building.  

There is not a ban on outdoor burning in Tom Green County for now, but conditions are not ideal for burning brush or trash.  Anyone participating in any outdoor activity that could result in a spark is advised not to do so.  If you must weld or burn, be smart and keep a water source nearby and remember that volunteer firefighters are paying the same over $4 per gallon of gas and over $5 for diesel that you are so keep them in mind.  

Also, it is a crime to chain a dog outside.  Be sure all outdoor pets have plenty of fresh water and access to shade.  And never ever, leave a child or a pet in a locked vehicle.  You might as well put a gun to their head and pull the trigger.  It is that deadly.
