Texas Forest Service Responding to Multiple Wildfires in West Texas

SONORA – Texas A&M Forest Service and Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System (TIFMAS) fire resources responded to several new requests for assistance on wildfires across the state Tuesday according to social media. 

According to the Lone Star State Incident Management Team Facebook, with the very high temperatures and dry vegetation, several wildfires became active and jumped containment lines. 

Continued moderate significant fire potential will exist in the Western/Eastern Hill Country and Rolling Plains areas on Wednesday and Thursday, as near record high temperatures combine with critically to extremely dry fuel and periods of elevated to critical fire weather. 

Very hot temperatures and mostly dry conditions during the week will decrease live and dead fuel moistures through Friday for much of the state. A general trend of increasing initial attack fire activity is likely for Central, East and South Texas. 

Active Fires:

- Mesquite Heat Fire, Taylor County - est. 1,500 acres, 10% contained

- Coconut Fire, Wilbarger County - est. 2,000 acres, 0% contained

- Pope 2 Fire, Schleicher County - est. 2,000 acres, 50% contained

- Bowman Fire, Dimmit County - est. 100 acres, 40% contained 

- Slab Road Fire, Llano County - est. 50 acres, 0% contained 

- Johnson Fork Fire, Kimble County - 66.5 acres, 65% contained

- Mayfield Fire, San Saba County - est. 758 acres, 75% contained; *the fire rekindled and moved across containment lines. 

Contained Fires (100%):

- Great Oak Fire, Medina County - 142 acres
