WATCH: Police Week Kicks Off in San Angelo with 21 Gun Salute

SAN ANGELO, TX – Police Week in San Angelo kicked off Monday with a ceremony that honored the fallen men and women of law enforcement.

During this year's event, officers with the San Angelo Police Department performed a 21 gun salute while airmen from Goodfellow AFB raised the flag.

Notable local figures in attendance during the event included Mayor Brenda Gunter, Chief of Police Frank Carter, City Manager Daniel Valenzuela, and City Councilman Harry Thomas.  Mayor Gunter, Valenzuela, and Chief Carter all gave speeches during the event.

In Frank Carter's speech he reminded the large number of law enforcement in attendance to continue to do their job. "We must remain vigilant at all times but remind ourselves not to form an opinion that it's us against them," said Chief Carter. "because in reality there is only one percent of the population that wishes harm upon us. The other 99 percent stand behind you."

Police week will run from May 15 through May 21. This is the week set aside every year, specifically May 15, to pay tribute to the local, state, and federal peace officers who have died, or who have been disabled, in the line of duty.

Ceremonies including flag raising, 21 gun salutes, church services, and even mock funerals are held across the country to commemorate the fallen men and women of law enforcement.
