Female Driver Arrested after School Bus Crash

A 29-year-old woman has been arrested on a warrant after running a stop sign and crashing into an SAISD school bus this morning, injuring four children.

At approximately 7:48 a.m., San Angelo Police were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident involving an SAISD school bus that was traveling to Lincoln Middle School.  It was learned upon arrival some of the children were complaining of non-incapacitating injuries.

SAFD Medics responded and transported four of the children to Shannon Medical Center for treatment. There is no further information on their condition.

Police learned through the investigation that a 2013 dark gray Chevrolet Impala, operated by 29-year-old Martha Valenzuela Castanon was traveling westbound on 39th Street. Castanon failed to yield the right of way at a stop sign and collided with the bus that was traveling north on Chadbourne.

Castanon was cited for failure to yield the right of way at a stop sign.  It was also learned that she had a warrant from El Paso for theft by check. Castanon was placed under arrest for the warrant and was transported to the Tom Green County Jail.

The bus involved in the crash was towed from the scene. Some of the children were released to parents at the scene of the crash. A second SAISD school bus arrived and transported the remaining children to school.
