City Officials and Students Recognized at Council Meeting

Brian Groves, Multimedia Coordinator for the City of San Angelo, was recognized at Tuesday’s City Council meeting for his selection as one of the San Angelo Standard Times’ “20 Under 40” honors, which recognizes the efforts of young professionals and emerging leaders in the community.

Groves was also given recognition for the six statewide video awards the City’s Public Information Office won at last month’s annual convention of the Texas Association of Telecommunications.

Also recognized were four students with disabilities who recently completed the San Angelo San Angelo Independent School District Vocational Program allowing them to work in various City departments were recognized for having mastered workplace skills in addition to schoolwork mastery.

One of the students, John Gibson, expressed gratitude to the public and the Council: “I just want to say that it’s a pretty big honor for me, Alberto [Frias], Jarrod [Weiss] and Quirt [Edwards] to be recognized in front of all of you,” he said. “If it wasn’t our coordinator…we wouldn’t have been given the opportunity to do all of this. I also want to say that it was fun being a part of this program and I hope that our futures will be bright.”

Students from other local schools were recognized for their participation in sports programs. First, the Mayor recognized the Central Bobcats, who have lost only one game this year. Several football players were present to receive recognition. Johnathon Flores stated on behalf of the group, ”I want to thank the whole city for their support.”

Flores’, gratitude was picked up by the students of over schools, as football players and cheerleaders from the Texas Leadership Charter Academy, who have won all games this season, came to the front of the meeting room. “We wouldn’t be the team or school without you,” said a varsity cheerleader for the Eagles.

The Consent Agenda was passed unanimously and the meeting moved forward to zoning.
