San Angelo Firefighters Quell Fast-Growing Grass Fire at Lakeshore Village

SAN ANGELO, TX — A quick-burning grassfire threatened the residences of Lakeshore Village off the 7500 block of Knickerbocker Rd., across from Mary E. Lee Park Saturday afternoon just after 3:30 p.m.

The San Angelo Fire Department responded quickly and appear as of 4 p.m. to have the fire under control. In all, about 3-4 acres burned near the backyard fence line of residences along Aspen Dr.

The Texas Forest Service, SAFD, San Angelo Police, and the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office responded.

Update 4:45 p.m.

The Fire Station 8 at the airport crew initially saw the smoke and flames and the Engine 8 and one airport rescue truck responded as fire engines from inside the city were dispatched.

As units arrived, they accomplished an initial fire extinguishing operation, called a ‘knockdown’, along the fence line separating the backyards of residences on Aspen Drive from the field where the fire was.

In all, three fire engines responded with two ambulances. An evacuation was ordered and the ambulances were needed to help.

The Texas Forestry Service responded with two command personnel and and an entire task force.

Fred Barnett, the SAFD battalion chief, said the incident was upgraded to a two-alarm fire

“We might need more water,” Barnett said. More engines from town can supply thousands of gallons.

In all, no more than 2-3 acres burned.

“Now that it’s over we have to ask ‘wow, did we overreact”’,” Barnett said. “With the residences there, we didn’t think we could overreact.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
