Sentencing Date Set. Vasquez Faces 70 Years in Prison

LUBBOCK, TX — The hearing to sentence Timothy Ray Vasquez, 52, the former San Angelo Chief of Police, is set for June 23 at 10 a.m. at the U.S. District Court in Lubbock.

Vasquez was convicted Thursday, March 24, of one count of bribery and three counts of honest mail fraud. Vasquez could face up to 70 years in prison according the the U.S. Department of Justice.

Vasquez was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals after the jury delivered his verdict during the trial. Vasquez’s conviction stems from about 13 years of payments made to him through his band, Funky Munky, for performances at Dailey and Wells Communications, Inc., a public safety radio vendor that the City of San Angelo hired to install and maintain its L3 Harris public safety radio system. The jury found that those payments were bribes paid to the former police chief for the chief’s advocacy of using Dailey and Wells and its Harris radio solution. The City last purchased a major radio upgrade from Dailey and Wells in 2015 for $5.7 million.

Federal District Judge James Wesley Hendrix ruled that Vasquez be immediately incarcerated because the prosecution argued it had confidential information that could lead the judge to believe Vasquez was a flight risk. The judge noted Thursday that although Vasquez was a model citizen while released on bond for 27 months awaiting trial, the circumstances had changed. The former police chief is facing a rather lengthy prison sentence, the judge said. With that, he ordered Vasquez locked up.

Vasquez is currently held in the Terry County Jail with no bond. He was booked into the facility at 4:59 p.m. Thursday wearing the same white dress shirt he wore during the final day of his trial. The jail is located in Brownfield.

If the pedo's walking around Angelo on probation isn't sign enough, there's no way he's getting 70 years. Tom green gonna find a way to monetize this. "you betchya"

Thank God. The feds have him. Let's see what they say. Figure he's in for life regardless. Shame shame shame Timmy.

He was tried and convicted in Lubbock.

Figures you didn't even read what you are commenting on.

I believe you've misspelled you're, and have faith even death is afraid of me.

Somebody should show a little compassion for this man and start a go-fund-me page for him to provide for his commissary needs. He will now be needing money for drinks, smokes and condoms and all this requires an account with a balance to purchase from.....

If he is put in general population he won’t be needing any of that stuff. He’ll be a dead man walking. He will probably be held where the general population can’t get at him.

But then we read Vasquez could be facing up to 70years in prison. Why not just start with that? It won't really make him look bad, I get it. ...  Seems like everytime someone is indicted in a case, they have to be guilty before they go to trial. The hear say and what we read or different every time you f we use common sense and look at things honestly. There's so many things that happen in law enforcement that we never hear about. And we won't hear about them unless we are in on it. But as good citizens, we should treat everyone with honestly. Common sense can tell us a lot. But not all of us have it or want to use it. We really can't judge a book by it's cover. I don't know Mr. Vasquez because I never spent time around him. I never worked for him, but have several school friends that worked for him and some even retired from there. So I don't believe he was one of the bad cop's. If we look at other cases, using common sense. In all other cases in the past, bribery is hidden. It's all done under the table as they say. You never take a check and put it in your account or anyone else's account. It's All Cash. Now in the other hand, when did we hear them say he never performed or played for the payment. So how is it bribery. If they would of said he was getting paid for something but never did what he was getting paid for is a different story. It kind of hurt's when we aren't treated right or fair.  When or whom could you tell me that as an officer or investigator, has spent day's, week's, or even months with the defendant to get the case written right. How many times in court have we heard the DA say the investigator spent so much time with the defendant and this is what he came out with, NEVER!  But yet us as citizens judge the one's we don't know without honestly. If we could treat others the way we want to be treated, we wouldn't be where we are now. I've seen cases in the past where innocent person are sent off to do time for things that they really didn't do wrong. But we all heard it was them, they did it. Hear say! How many times haven't we been judge wrong. I know I have, I'm not perfect and I admit that. Lord says, he that hasn't sin, throw the first Stone. I'm not one of those, so I can't just throw comments out here if I can't prove them really happening. I'm sure we all make mistakes, and we learn from them. But to make San Angelo better, we need to start with ourselves. Then we can correct others. There's many things in many trail's that are not brought out to justice. But a badge isn't going to save me or anyone with one from our last judgment. I'm sure it's not going to be in a courtroom, we are already in the courtroom and just don't know it. Then it will be too late to bring honestly back. I will say this again, I'm not perfect....but I do try to be better today than I was yesterday. Yesterday is gone, tomorrow isn't here for me yet I don't know if it will come until tomorrow. Then it's a blessing, the rest is just up to me and you to do right. God bless America ?
