SAN ANGELO – Hot and dry conditions early this spring have increased the threat of wildfires across West Texas prompting the National Weather Service to issue another Red Flag Warning from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday.
According to the NWS, northwest winds of 15 to 20 mph will gust up to 30 mph and combine with relative humidity levels between 8 and 12 percent Thursday afternoon. Those conditions combined with extremely dry fuel due to the ongoing drought meet the conditions required to issue a Red Flag Warning for dangerous wildfires.
Any wildfire that starts will likely expand rapidly and become out of control.
Outdoor burning and any activity that may cause a stray spark like welding is strongly discouraged.
A Red Flag Warning means critical wildfire conditions are occurring now or will occur shortly. A combination of high winds, low humidity and dry fuels will contribute to extreme wildfire conditions.
These conditions are not likely to change over the next seven days with little or no rain in the forecast.
