Macadamia Nuts, Ice Cream Recalled in Texas

Texas Star Nut and Food Co., Inc. has recalled their Nature's Eats Natural Macadamia Nuts due to a possible salmonella contamination.

The affected productswere distributed only to HEB stores in Texas  and includes lot code #31435001, sold between Dec. 30 and March 20. Best Before 12/23/2015 located on the bottom of the nutritional label on the back of the bag.

The recall was initiated as a result of a report received by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration which detected Salmonella in a random sampling of our Nature’s Eats Natural Macadamia Nut product. The recall was as the result of a routine sampling program by the FDA which revealed that the finished products contained the bacteria.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

So far, no illnesses have been reported as a result of the product, however consumers are urged not to eat the nuts and to return them to HEB for a full refund.

The company has ceased the production and distribution of the product as the FDA and the company continues their investigation as to what caused the problem.

Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

There have been no reported illnesses to date, however consumers are urged not to eat the products, but to return them for a full refund.
