EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: Dallas Cowboys Legend Jay Novacek Lifts Spirits in San Angelo

SAN ANGELO, TX – Dallas Cowboys legendary tight end Jay Novacek made a stop in San Angelo Saturday for a bottle signing and tasting at Lone Star Liquors for his signature whiskey.

While 84 Proof small batch craft whiskey has only been out about a year, the idea has been on Novacek’s mind for a while.

“I’ve always liked good whiskey. My wife and I were just in a deer blind about six years ago and I just said, ‘I’d love to have my own whiskey’, and I already had a name for it, 84 Proof,” Novacek said., “ So, we just started looking around and found the right individual that made really good whiskey and taught me a little bit about how the whole business worked, and we’ve been a great partnership”

The story on the bottle of whiskey goes,

“I’ve enjoyed a long, successful career as a professional football player.

These days, I like to spend my time off the field sharing great memories and good times over a glass of my favorite whiskey with my closest family, friends, and teammates. Cheers to hard work, notable achievements, and savoring the simpler side of life on the sidelines.

I hope you experience the same enjoyment and please sip responsibly.”

While Jay was in San Angelo, he said he’s been putting miles in to promote 84 Proof.

“We’ve been a few places down in south Texas 3 or 4 different times. Been out to Amarillo, Lubbock, been in Abilene, here obviously, and around the Dallas/Fort Worth area.” Said Novacek.

Lone Star Liquors, located at 6510 Hwy 67 South, hosted Jay for the bottle signing. The small liquor store is locally owned and operated by Alyssia Chappell and husband, Shelby Chappell.

Chappell bought Lone Star Liquors in July 2018 and has been running since. When asked about whose idea it was bringing in Novacek, Chappell said, “It was Mark’s (idea). He tried to talk me into this for a few months… finally him and his new representative talked me into it about 3 weeks ago.”

Mark Medellin worked for MBW Brands in Waxahachie, Texas. MBW Brands helps to finish off the final product that is 84 Proof.

Altogether, there were 55 cases of 84 Proof, which comes out to 330 individual bottles, all of which were signed by the Super Bowl Champion Novacek.

Over 100 people showed up to Lone Star Liquors for an autographed bottle and pictures with Novacek.

Lone Star Liquors is the only liquor store in San Angelo that carries 84 Proof and may have a few signed bottles left.

“It was pretty good, can’t complain.” Chappell said of the turnout at the signing.

Lone Star Liquors is open Monday-Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and is closed on Sundays.

84 Proof sells for just over $30.00 a bottle.

For the Cowboy fans out there, Novacek had plenty of stories about his time with the franchise and talked about the current state of the Cowboys.

Jay Novacek played tight end in the NFL for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Dallas Cowboys. Novacek was drafted in the 6th round, 158th overall by the Cardinals in 1985 and signed with the Dallas Cowboys in 1990. It was with Dallas where Novacek won 3 Super Bowls and put together an All-Pro season in 1992. Novacek finished his career with 422 receptions, 4,630 yards and 30 touchdowns.

“This year I think they led the league in penalties.” Novacek said.

He’s right, the Cowboys had 127 penalties and 14 against the 49ers in the playoffs.

“Can’t do that,” Novacek added. “That’s what kills you in the playoffs. They have to understand that. They have to be coached to understand it, themselves, as individuals, they need to understand it.”

One play Novacek added was the Cowboys were very good on turnovers this year but also added, “They have to learn how to win. When it gets right down to it, it’s more of a consistent thing throughout the whole game. It seems like a lot of those games that they did win or almost won they had to come from behind, you know, you’ve got to come out and beat people.”

Being the tight end from the Super Bowl winning Cowboys team, Novacek also talked about the current tight end of the Cowboys, Dalton Schultz.

“He stepped up and played extremely well and he was very very influential on what he was able to do and what the Cowboys can do with that.” Novacek said, “You know they have great wide receivers and so you get a third guy in there that is consistent and very good at what he does, that just helps them out.”

When asked if the Cowboys should resign Schultz, who is a free agent this year, Novacek said, “Absolutely.”
