Snowmageddon II: NWS Says Coldest, Most Dangerous Weather of the Season is Coming

SAN ANGELO – Meteorologists with the National Weather Service in San Angelo are warning of the strongest winter weather storm expected to hit later this week in the Concho Valley bringing below freezing temperatures for several consecutive days.  

The devastating winter storm last year hit on Feb. 14, Valentine's Day, leaving most of West Texas below freezing with record snowfall for several days bursting pipes, downing tree limbs and knocking out electricity to most of the state including San Angelo for days.  

Meteorologists expect the strongest arctic cold front of the season to converge on San Angelo and West Central Texas by Wednesday night.  Temperatures will remain below freezing from Wednesday night to at least Saturday afternoon with periods of heavy snow and freezing rain.  

The timing and severity of the snowfall are uncertain at this time but most weather models predict the massive arctic cold front arriving as early as Tuesday.  An additional arctic trough will bring heavier snow and even colder temperatures Thursday with highs in the teens to single digits in some locations.  

This is a serious storm and residents are urged to prepare Monday and Tuesday for several days of below freezing temperatures while the weather is still good. 

There is a 70 percent chance of snow Wednesday and a 50 percent chance of heavy snow Wednesday night into Thursday.  Again, temperatures in the Concho Valley will remain below freezing until Saturday afternoon.  

Prepare for icy roadways and hazardous driving conditions beginning Wednesday.  Protect outdoor pipes, plants and pets.  Weather this cold for this long can kill household pets and severely injure unprotected livestock.  

Snowmageddon last February saw San Angelo and most of Texas without electricity for days in blizzard like conditions.  The electric grid failed leaving millions of Texans without power for several days.  On top of the massive and deadly power outage, San Angelo residents also experienced several days without running water when the city water system depressurized because of burst pipes.  

This is a dangerous and potentially deadly weather situation and residents are urged to prepare for it now.
