SAN ANGELO – The controlled burn at San Angelo State Park during the last week darkened area skies and caused some concerns among residents who worried it might have been a wildfire.
San Angelo State Park crews carefully planned a series of controlled or prescribed burns to benefit the park.
According to information from the State Park, controlled burns are carefully controlled fires designed to maintain the health of the ecosystem. These burns encourage new plant growth and recycle the nutrients stored in plants back into the soil. Just like water, sunlight and nutrients, this habitat needs regular fires in order to thrive.

Trained firefighters and biologists planned the burns in advance, taking weather, landscape, weather and other factors into account.
