A couple on an afternoon Harley ride have crashed out on in the 2500 block of S. Burma Road, where Shannon Medical Center's Airmed 1 is preparing to land and life-flight one rider to the hospital.
The crash occurred approximately three miles north of Arden Road, and appears to involve only the one motorcycle. Based on the location of the crash, it looks as if the driver may have failed to negotiate a hairpin turn and exited the roadway to the north.
The severity of the injuries is not yet known, however one rider is lying on the ground being tended to by medics, as the other is being loaded into the helicopter. Both were placed on backboards.
A Peterbuilt semi is parked across the street and does not appear to have been involved in the crash, however this has not been confirmed.
Tom Green County Sheriff's Deputies, TxDPS Troopers, SAFD Medics and Carlsbad VFD are on scene.
Update 2:37 p.m.
Erik Gamez, a water truck driver out of Mertzon, explained that he was driving by heading in the opposite direction when he saw the crash on the opposite side of the road and stopped to render aid.
"I got out, I checked to see if they were ok, tried to talk to them, told them not to move," Gamez said. "I ran over to my trailer and grabbed my triangles. I set them out for any other traffic coming towards me...so they would see the accident. That was about it. I stayed with them and talked to them the whole time."
Gamez said the riders, a male and a female, were both lucid and coherent, and noted the female was crying. He said he was the first on the scene and the bike was upright when he arrived. The reporter on scene speculates that one of the riders picked the bike up after the crash, realized he was injured, and laid back down on the ground.
Comments
I hope both riders are found to have minor injuries and are treated and released quickly. An abundance of caution when dealing with injuries sustained in any accident is certainly appreciated, and all EMT's I know are always there and provide the best emergency care possible.
