SAN ANGELO – A San Angelo man wanted for aggravated assault led San Angelo Police on a high speed chase through the city ending after officers used spike strips ending the chase near the San Angelo Central Freshman Campus.
According to reports, an officer attempted to stop a Dodge Ram pickup on S. David St. near Central High School when the driver sped off. The officer pursued the pickup though the Santa Rita neighborhood at speeds reaching 65 mph.
Shortly after the chase began another officer used a spike strip which successfully flattened the left front tire of the pickup but the driver kept driving.
The chase eventually included several police vehicles down Bryant Blvd. to about Ave. W where the suspect turned back onto Ben Ficklin headed north. Police followed the suspect through several red lights and stop signs on Oaks St.
The vehicle sped through downtown and north on Oaks St. where it finally came to a stop in front of the Central High School Freshman Campus.
Dispatchers were asked to call the school and request a lock down.
The suspect fled the vehicle on foot and was quickly stopped by officers. The suspect resisted and was tased according to reports.
Officers called for an ambulance for a 39-year-old suspect who was tased.
San Angelo Police Public Information Officer Richard Espinosa, Officers were investigating a domestic violence episode where a man pulled a gun on this wife and child. Officers identified the suspect as Jeremiah Chavarria. He was located inside the pickup.
Chavarria continued to evade on foot. Officers tased Chavarria as he struggled and he was taken into custody. Officers say he was transported to Shannon Emergency Room for the treatment of minor injuries.
Espinosa characterized the chase as a very slow pursuit. No one else was injured.
