Message from TxDOT
Temperatures are falling rapidly this afternoon across the district and moisture is now falling in most areas. In preparation for tonight’s expected winter weather, TxDOT’s San Angelo district is pre-treating areas of priority roadways in an effort to reduce potential ice accumulation that could cause hazardous driving conditions later tonight when temperatures fall below freezing. It is important that you keep informed of changing weather conditions over the next several hours and limit or avoid travel later tonight. For the latest road conditions throughout the San Angelo District follow us on Twitter @TxDOT San Angelo. Motorists can also call the TxDOT road conditions statewide hotline at 1-800-452-9292 or visit www.drivetexas.org.
Priority roadways are identified based on traffic type and volume, and include 150 miles of Interstate 10 from east of Segovia to Sheffield. The San Angelo District includes the following counties: Glasscock, Sterling, Coke, Runnels, Reagan, Irion, Tom Green, Concho, Menard, Schleicher, Crockett, Sutton, Kimble, Edwards and Real.
The safety of the traveling public is TxDOT’s priority. Motorists should avoid traveling in winter conditions, but if they must, they should observe these winter safety tips:
· Drive slowly, with cruise control turned off and using smooth steering movements. It’s harder to control or stop your vehicle on a slick or snow-covered surface.
· Increase your following distance to allow plenty of time to stop for vehicles ahead.
· Accelerate and brake gently using slow, steady strokes to test traction. Approach turns slowly.
· Use extra caution on bridges, ramps, overpasses and shaded areas, as they tend to freeze first. If you find yourself in a skid, stay calm and ease your foot off the gas while carefully steering into the direction of the skid until you regain traction.
· Watch for road crews in large, slow moving vehicles as they treat roadways. Be sure to give them plenty of room.
