KERRVILLE — A human smuggler caught with nine illegals in the Hill Country was arrested last week.
According to the Kerr County Sheriff’s Office, on Sep. 25, 2021, a KSCO Patrol Division Deputy observed a vehicle on Interstate 10 east of Kerrville with expired registration.
After attempting to initiate a traffic stop, the vehicle attempted to evade for a short period before finally stopping in the area of mile marker 504. In the rear of the vehicle were discovered nine male illegal immigrants.
This stop and resulting arrest were supported by additional KCSO Deputies and the Kerrville Police Department. The immigrants were released into the custody of the Border Patrol.
Joseph Ashton Rendon, 34, of Austin, was arrested for Human Smuggling, Evading Arrest, and for an outstanding warrant for Violation of a Protective Order.
Upon arrest, Mr. Rendon was booked into the Kerr County Jail on bonds totaling $102,500. Additional charges may be added as this investigation continues. As in all criminal cases, charges may be added or modified prior to trial, and all suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
“The border situation is having a continued and increasing effect on Kerr County,” said Sheriff Larry Leitha. “In our jurisdiction, we will use all available and legal techniques to intercept those who are profiting off others in this way. We will continue to work with all local, state, and federal jurisdictions to prevent the crisis at the US/Mexico border from reaching further into Kerr County. If you see something and have reason to believe human trafficking is taking place, please reach out to our office or call 830.896.TIPS.”
