First Responders BBQ Cook Off Donates Proceeds to Fallen Eden Officers

SAN ANGELO – Volunteers with the 2nd-ish annual First Responders BBQ Cook Off presented checks from the proceeds of the event to Concho County Sheriff Chad Miller Thursday during a ceremony at the Michael D. Brown Justice Center in San Angelo.

The checks will go to the families of two officers killed in the line of duty in Eden earlier this year.

As we reported earlier, two Concho County Sheriff’s Deputies were engaged in a struggle where the deputies attempted to use a Taser to subdue a suspect on a routine call. That is when both deputies were shot and killed by the suspect. The two victims were Deputy Stephen Jones and Deputy Samuel Leonard.

The Cook Off competition raised $5,000 for the families.

Dozens of BBQ aficionados gathered at Lake Nasworthy Saturday Aug. 14, 2021 for the 2nd-ish annual First Responders BBQ Cook-off to recognize and honor police, sheriff's deputies, firefighters and all area first responders.

The inaugural First Responders BBQ Cook-off was held in 2019 and then in 2020 the event was canceled because of the pandemic so the Cook-off in August was the second competition in three years.

The competition was held at the end of Spillway Rd. along the Twin Buttes Dam on the banks of Lake Nasworthy.
