Hundreds of Afghan Refugees Could Resettle in Texas

DALLAS, TX – As the crisis continues to unfold in Afghanistan, thousands attempt to flee from the violence of the Taliban in the wake of Sunday's takeover of Kabul. Many of those fleeing the country aided the U.S. military over the last two decades.

In response to the mass exodus organizations around the world are stepping up to help those displaced. The latest reports suggest approximately 30,000 Afghan refugees may be brought into the U.S. in the coming weeks.

In the Lone Star State, the Refugee Services of Texas announced it will help resettle 324 Afghans locally. These refugees have applied for Special Immigrant Visas that allow them to qualify to be resettled in the United States.

Over the next few weeks, the more than 300 refugees will be transported to the offices of Refugee Services located in Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, and Houston. This past weekend a family of seven was resettled in Austin, with four more families expected to arrive this week.

"Afghan nationals who cooperated with the U.S. military are in a highly volatile and dangerous situation as the Taliban overruns the county. We have an obligation as Americans to support those who gave everything to help our nation, and we must act now to ensure these refugees are evacuated and transported to safety," said Russell Smith, CEO of Refugee Services of Texas. "We are proud of the tireless support we receive from volunteers –– Texans who have been welcoming presence for decades as thousands of refugees from around the world find their new home in one of the friendliest and most accommodating places on earth, the Lone Star State. I am confident that Texans will once again step up and welcome these vulnerable families to our shores."
