SAN ANGELO, TX – The 2nd-ish annual First Responders BBQ Cook-off returns this weekend to Lake Nasworthy and organizers say there's still room for more teams and more judges.
The first annual First Responders BBQ Cook-off was held in the summer of 2019 at the end of Spillway Rd. in a quiet, pecan-tree lined park that is normally closed to the public. The pandemic at first postponed then canceled the 2020 version so the cook off Aug. 13 through Aug. 15 is the second event held in the third year.
According to the San Angelo First Responders Cook Off Facebook page, there's room for 16 more teams as of Tuesday morning. Organizers have room for 50 teams.
The cook-off is being held, "In honor and gratitude to our community first responders who risk their lives and health everyday for the well being of their fellow man." according to the site.
The traditional cook-off includes jalapeño poppers, chicken, ribs and brisket categories along with a kids competition. The cost is $25 per category per team.
Organizers say there will be a variety of vendors in the shade of the pecan trees as well.
Here are the turn in times for each category Saturday:
11 a.m. Poppers
12 p.m. Chicken
1 p.m. Kids Q
2 p.m. Ribs
3 p.m. Brisket
4 p.m. SAPD vs SAFD vs TGCSO People's Choice Award
5 p.m. Awards
