San Angelo Third Grader Wins SACB’s Poetry Contest

The San Angelo Civic Ballet (SACB) received almost one hundred poems in its recently held Poetry Contest for area 2nd-4th graders and would like to announce the winning poem, “Super Powers that Make Candy” by Julian Duron, a third grade student at Reagan Elementary.   Julian’s poem will become part of the story in SACB’s upcoming all new youth production, Poetry in Motion, March 27th – 28th at Angelo Civic Theatre.  “His imagination really shined through in this poem.  I just loved the way he used sounds!  His poem immediately stood out to me,” said Artistic Director, Meghann Bridgeman.

In addition to being set to music and choreography by Artistic Director, Meghann Bridgeman, the winning poem will be illustrated by this show’s collaborating artist, Carolina Villarreal of Austin, Texas.  The poem will be printed in the Poetry in Motion performance programs and displayed in the lobby of the theater.  Julian will be invited to bow with the cast at the end of the performance and attend a Tom Green County Story Time with SACB to read his poem aloud.

The skill and creativity of the poems submitted made it very difficult to select a winner.  As a result, SACB would like to also announce the top ten Honorable Mentions:  Fort Concho Elementary – Arianna Foster, “Spaghetti,” Franchesca Untalan, “BLUE,” Hadley Hallmark, “Favorite Sound,” and Ariana Aguilar, “The Blue Sea;”  Holiman Elementary – Grace Mutka, “Blue;”  Lamar Elementary – Tyler Shukis, 18 Wheeler;”  Reagan Elementary – Brandon Wolsfeld, “Travelling Al Around the World,” Madilyn Serda, “Rain,” Nicholas Flores, “Blue Super Powers,” and Isabella Gonzales, “My Super Powers.”

All Honorable Mention poems will be displayed in the theatre lobby during Poetry in Motion.  The names of the poets will be included in the performance program.

SACB would like to thank the SAISD teachers, principals, and parents who made this contest possible.  It has been an incredibly inspiring experience to read through all of the submissions.

Poetry in Motion is generously sponsored by Spike S Ranch.  Additional production sponsors include: Ethicon, Mary C. Smith, Kinney Franke Architects AIA, Walmart, HEB-Helping Here, Armstrong, Backus & CO., LLC, First Financial Bank of San Angelo, KIDY Fox, and Foster Communications.
