Abilene ICU Reaches Full Capacity As Covid-19 Infections Skyrocket

ABILENE, TX – As Covid-19 infections continue to surge in Taylor County, Hendrick Health is reporting the Intensive Care Unit is at capacity.

According to officials, the Abilene Health System ICU currently has 34 patients –– with only two who have been vaccinated.

One major concern for healthcare officials is that if local hospitals reach capacity neighboring hospitals may deny patient transfers for those who need special attention.

During an Abilene City Council meeting, the Director of Public Health Anette Lerm spoke about the issue.

"We’re not overly concerned about whether people get sick," said Lerm. "It's whose going to need to go to the hospital and if we fill it up with COVID patients and we happen to have a heart attack case, whose going to take care of you?”
