UPDATE: Unofficial Final Election Results

SAN ANGELO, TX — (Refresh this page for the latest election results) It is Election Day in San Angelo! The polls for the May 1 Election close at 7 p.m. and below are the results as we get them. The first results will be released by the County Elections Office sometime after 7 p.m. Usually, the early and mail-in voting results are released before the Election Day totals.

This election will decide who the Mayor of San Angelo will be for the next four years. Incumbent Mayor Brenda Gunter faced two challengers in real estate agent Silvara Lawson and health care administrator Dietrick Tillis. Lawson proposed an open dialog with citizens to solve problems, akin to a crowd-sourcing leadership style. Tillis wanted the City of San Angelo to become involved in providing opportunities outside normal city functions, like fostering an after school STEM program for children.

In Single Member District 2, incumbent Councilman Tom Thompson faced two challengers in Mercedes DeLa Cruz and Cie Avel Rangel.

In Single Member District 6, incumbent Councilwoman Billie DeWitt faced two challengers as well. Larry Miller proposed a more conservative approach to debt and James R. Ervin stressed his experience in the military often.

San Angelo City Councilwoman Lucy Gonzeles attracted no challengers. She will automatically win.

At the San Angelo ISD, the renaming of Robert E. Lee Middle School was the issue that motivated Debbie Cross to challenge incumbent board member Dr. Taylor Kingman, MD. Collyn Neal Glaspie also threw her hat into the ring for this seat.

San Angelo ISD SMD 1 saw incumbent board member Bill Dendle of Angelo Plumbing Supply be challenged by longtime political candidate Chris Giroux who is a construction and maintenance technician. Giroux previously challenged San Angelo ISD Board President Lanny Layman and lost in 2019. Will Giroux have better luck in 2021?

Running unopposed and now presumed the winner of the San Angelo ISD SMD2 board seat is Lupita Arroyo.

Of the races mentioned so far, those with more than 2 candidates, the victor must receive 50 percent plus one vote to avoid a runoff. If no one receives a majority of the votes, the winner will be determined in a special runoff election in the near future.

The Grape Creek ISD Board of Trustees will select 4 members out of a slate of 8 candidates tonight. The top 4 vote-getters will get the nod. In Water Valley ISD, residents there are voting to approve or disapprove an $8.2 million school bond for new facility construction.
