Fort Concho Celebrates Frontier Day Once Again

SAN ANGELO, TX -- This weekend Fort Concho will be hosting several events for families in the Concho Valley.

On Thursday evening families are invited to visit the North Concho Campgrounds at the San Angelo State Park from 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. for "Star Story Night."

Attendees will be able to listen to Native American and Greek stories of the constellations visible in the April sky.

There will be telescopes to view the moon and stars and guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and/or blanket, as well as a red flashlight to help maintain their vision once adjusted to the darkness.

To reach the campgrounds Enter at the North Shore Gate by taking US Highway 87 North to FM 2288 South. The guest gate will be on the left. The sign at the gate reading “North Concho River, Equestrian Camping area.”

On Saturday, stop by Fort Concho for Frontier Day. The 45-year tradition will kick off with the Lions Club's Pancake Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. The $6 breakfast ticket will include pancakes, sausage, milk, juice, and coffee.

From the morning to noon, explore music, living history demonstrations, a mock gunfight by the Concho Cowboy Company, vintage baseball, children’s games, arts and crafts, and activities reflecting the region’s agricultural and ranching heritage on the Parade Ground and porches along Officers’ Row. The event is free for all attendees.

As Frontier Day activities take place in one area of the fort, visitors can also witness the Regional Cavalry Competition.

The competition will feature competitors from several states, plus active duty and retired military personnel from Fort Carson, CO; Fort Huachuca, AZ; and Fort Irwin, CA.

Competitors will take part in saber, pistol, jumping, military horsemanship, and combat horsemanship on the Parade Grounds.

All competitors will be wearing replica military uniforms and using period equipment that reflects the United States Cavalry of the 1800-1944 era. 

The event will kick-off at 9:00 a.m. and conclude at 4:00 p.m. Guests are welcome to bring their own chairs or sit on the benches on Barracks 1 and 2.
