WATCH: Inaugural Flight From Houston Lands in San Angelo

SAN ANGELO, TX – It took years in the making but on Wednesday the San Angelo Regional Airport officially began running commercial flights from San Angelo to Houston.

SkyWest 5027 took off from George Bush Intercontinental at 11:52 a.m. (nine minutes early) and landed at the San Angelo Regional Airport at 1:16 p.m. (15 minutes early). Check out the video below of the CRJ-200 landing in Mathis Field.

"This is one of those projects that citizens said to us we need a flight from San Angelo to Houston and Houston to San Angelo if you accomplish one thing please make this happen and so today is the red ribbon cutting of the number one thing citizens asked for," said Mayor Brenda Gunter during her speech at the event. Following this the crowd erupted with a round of applause.

Airport improvements have always been a big point of emphasis from the Mayor. She believes that having a successful airport will result in a successful economy. The last time San Angelo had commercial flights to Houston was in 2008. The reason for that flight being canceled was the airline that provided the flight, Continental Airlines, merged with United Express.

Airport Director for the San Angelo Regional Airport, Jeremy Valgardson, said that they had been trying to resume the flight since 2011 and have finally succeeded in getting the flight back.

"The community wanted Houston,"said Valgardon. "You can see what happens when a community sticks togethers. We can get what we want."

Flights will run twice a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon.
