AUSTIN, TX – The Texas House approved a bill Thursday that would make it legal to carry a gun without a permit.
Republican Matt Schaefer, out of Tyler, introduced the bill and colleagues such as Drew Darby and Tom Craddick backed him. Texas Democrats tried their hardest to stop the bill from passing.
In an article by the Texas Tribune, they mentioned the fight put up by the left. The following is a section of that article: "Two Democrats — Diego Bernal of San Antonio and Rafael Anchía of Dallas — tried unsuccessfully to amend Schaefer’s bill to bar domestic terrorists, or “violent white supremacist extremist[s], as defined by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security” from carrying a handgun without a permit. “I think it’s always the right time to be talking about denouncing white supremacists and preventing guns from falling into their hands,” Anchía said before his proposed amendment failed."
Although they tried their hardest the left lost the battle and the bill was passed 87-58-2. Seven Democrats even voted to pass the bill. Terry Canales of Edinburg, who was a joint author, Ryan Guillen of Rio Grande City, another joint author, Harold Dutton of Houston, Richard Peña Raymond of Laredo, Tracy King of Batesville, Leo Pacheco of San Antonio, and Eddie Morales Jr. of Eagle Pass all sided with Texas republicans.
The NRA was one of the main outside entities pushing for the legislation to pass.
"Thank you to Rep. Schaefer for authoring this important bill, to House Committee Chairmen James White (R-Woodville) & Dustin Burrows (R-Lubbock) for moving the legislation through their committees, and to Speaker Dade Phelan and his team for their leadership on this critical measure," stated the NRA in a release."It's time for Texas to join the 20 other states that have legalized this personal protection option!
