SAN ANGELO, TX – San Angelo ISD high school and middle school bands and orchestras had excellent performances at recent UIL competitions, some being awarded the highest honors.
Lake View High School Band and Orchestra, Central High School Orchestra, Glenn Middle School Orchestra, and Lee Middle School Orchestra all participated in the UIL Concert & Sight-Reading competitions while the Lake View High School Mariachi participated in the UIL Solo-Ensemble contest.
Lake View Honor Band and all four Central High School Orchestras earned Sweepstakes Awards at the UIL Region 6 Concert & Sight-Reading contest, the highest honor awarded. The Sweepstakes Award is achieved by earning a Division I (Superior) rating in both concert and sight-reading. The rating scale used in UIL music events ranges from Division 1 (Superior) for a superior performance worthy of distinction to Division V (Poor) for much room for improvement. For the concert portion, students play three prepared concert pieces, whereas for the sight-reading portion, they perform a new piece they have never seen before.
This is the third year in a row for the Lake View Chief’s Band to earn the Sweepstakes Award, and the 37th year for the Central High School Bobcat Orchestra. The Lake View Band Program is under the direction of Josh Bailey, Jesse Bailey, Sarah Clark and Victoria Gonzalez. Central High School Orchestra is directed by Emilee Hall-Rocha and Mykel Martin.
Lake View Orchestra was rated as a Division 2 (Excellent) rating in sight-reading. Lake View Orchestra is under the direction of Stephanie Infante.
“The amount of practice and dedication shown by our music directors and students is more than impressive. I am very proud of their accomplishments, ” said Tiffany Huebner, SAISD Director of Advanced Academics and Fine Arts.
Lake View High School Mariachi also performed with excellence at the UIL Region 6 Solo-Ensemble contest earning a Division I (Superior) rating, and will advance to the State Contest for the fifth consecutive year. Eleven mariachi students were selected for All-Region Mariachi with three advancing to the area contest: senior Amy Torrez, senior Alany Jimenez and junior Jessie Martinez. The Lake View Mariachi program is led by Director Rosendo Ramos. In response to the success of Mariachi Solo and Ensemble Mr. Rosendo Ramos said, “Working hard individually will make the group work more efficiently.”
San Angelo ISD middle schools also participated in the UIL Concert & Sight-Reading contest, with Glenn Middle School Varsity Chamber Orchestra earning the Sweepstakes Award by earning a Division I (Superior) rating in both concert and sight-reading. Lee Middle School 8th Grade Symphony Orchestra received a Division I (Superior) rating in sight-reading and a Division II (Excellent) rating in concert. The Glenn Non-Varsity Honors Orchestra earned a Division I (Superior) rating in sight-reading and a Division II (Excellent) rating in concert, and Glenn Sub-Non-Varsity Concert Orchestra earned a Division II (Excellent) rating in both concert and sight-reading.
