Firefighters Fend off House Fire During Car Fire in Driveway

The San Angelo Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire in the driveway of a residence in the 600 block of Preusser Street at 8:40 a.m. Saturday morning.

According to Battalion Chief Fred Barnett, when firefighters arrived the car’s engine compartment was completely engulfed in flames. Their challenge, he said, was to keep the fire from spreading onto the home structure. The fire was quickly extinguished before the fire spread driver and passenger compartment of the vehicle.

The owner of the car said that he went out earlier to start the car to warm it up before his drive to work. He went back inside the home to gather his belongings. When he returned, he saw smoke pouring out from under the hood. He dialed 911.

The fire marshal was on the way to investigate when we left the scene.
